GIS Data & Maps: Shoreline Hardening & Riparian Development
Below are two maps that depict general trends of 1) shoreline hardening and 2) riparian development occurring in the Chesapeake Bay tidal waters. The data were extracted from the CCRM Shoreline Inventory; however, some county shorelines were surveyed several years ago (see table below for survey and publication dates).
The CCRM Shoreline Inventory conducts surveys in navigable tidal waters. The percentages depicted = amount developed/hardened of the tidal shoreline surveyed. Some shorelines were not surveyed in a given county (e.g. small creeks); therefore, these were not included in the estimation. Virginia Beach estimates only include data from the Lynnhaven River.
