Research: Marine Debris

ghost crabpots

Marine Debris Removal Project - Derelict (lost or abandoned) blue crab traps (pots) can continue to capture and kill animals for several years. Removal of marine debris can result in a natural resource and economic benefit if conducted in a structured and environmentally sensitive manner.

modified crabpot

Ghost Crabpots and Marine Debris - CCRM performed controlled laboratory experiments related to gear modifications that included biodegradable panels, ‘memory plastic’ and/or ‘rebound rubber’ coupled with ‘rot cord’  to provide an escape mechanism for marine fauna trapped by derelict or ‘ghost’ crab pots.
