Wetlands: Living Shorelines Introduction

(skip intro and go to Livingshorelines subsite)

Shoreline property owners can make wise choices in protecting their property as well as protecting the Bay against pollutants that runoff from the land.

In areas that have low to moderate wave energy, property owners may opt to plant a shoreline buffer of low-growing trees and shrubs, trim lower branches from existing large shoreline trees, installing non-structural designs, and/or installing coconut-fiber coir or biologs. These coir logs:

  • cost less than rock (rip-rap) or wooden bulkheads

  • filter the water and provide wildlife habitat

  • can be planted with vegetation

  • allow wildlife access

  • dissipate wave energy, so that underwater grasses along the shoreline can take root

Areas with higher wave energy can utilize offshore breakwaters.
