Lynnhaven Bay, Virginia
Digital Shoreline Situation Report (SSRs) - Description and Disclaimer
The Comprehensive Coastal Inventory Program (CCI) at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) is generating Shoreline Inventories for all coastal localities in Virginia and Maryland. The Lynnhaven River Shoreline Inventory was developed independently as part of a larger effort to examine the impacts that anthropogenic activities have on fish communities. These activities include dredging and shoreline modifications. The protocols developed for generating a shoreline inventory provided a database that could meet the project goal and at the same time become a useful resource for stakeholders within the watershed.
The data contained within the Shoreline Inventory is based on a three-tiered shoreline assessment approach. The assessment characterizes conditions that are observed from a small boat navigating along the shoreline. Hand-held GPS units are used to log features. The three tiered shoreline assessment approach reports conditions in three regions: 1) the immediate riparian zone, evaluated for land use; 2) the bank, evaluated for height, stability, cover and natural protection; and 3) the shoreline, describing the presence of shoreline structures for shore protection and recreational purposes. Three GIS coverages are generated. The lynn_lubc coverage contains features related to the land use in the riparian zone and conditions at the bank. The lynn_sstruc coverage includes information pertaining to structures for shoreline defense. Finally, lynn_astru_point identifies structures that are typically built for access and recreational activities at the shore. All three can be downloaded as shapefiles from this site through links at the bottom of this page. A metadata file is provided to describe each file.
GIS files are developed from the GPS datasets collected in the field. The coverages are corrected to a shoreline basemap generated from a digital terrain model (DTM) from the Virginia Base Mapping Program’s (VBPM) from high resolution natural color imagery. This shoreline is re-coded to reflect features and attributes observed in the field. The metadata file that accompanies the shapefiles define attribute accuracy, data development, and any use restrictions that pertain to the data. When downloading data from this site, the users agree to all conditions outlined in the disclaimer below.
This series is published entirely in digital format. Below, a text report includes an outline of methods. Color maps illustrate the conditions recorded. Tables quantify data on a plate by plate basis. These sources can be downloaded with Adobe Acrobat Reader.

The Lynnhaven River Shoreline Inventory was funded by the United States Army Corps of Engineers through contract number W91236-06-C-0065. The work was completed entirely with staff support and management from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science’s Comprehensive Coastal Inventory Program. Special thanks to co-principal investigator, Donna Bilkovic for project coordination, and the VIMS vessel center for vessel support.
