Resources: York River Water Budget - Daily Flow Rates in the York River and Tributaries

A summary of daily flow information in the York River and tributaries:

  • Flow rates vary daily and seasonally but are overall higher in the Pamunkey River

  • Average daily flow in the Mattaponi River between 1970-2007 was 593 cfs, with a minimum flow of 0.25 cfs and a maximum flow of 16,200 cfs.

  • Average daily flow in the Pamunkey River between 1970-2007 was 1075 cfs, with a minimum flow of 22 cfs and a maximum flow of 25,000 cfs.

  • Average annual flow during that same time period was 6,907 cfs in the Mattaponi River and 13,069 cfs in the Pamunkey River.

  • The range of flow rates peaked during the 1970’s and appears slightly higher today than during the 1950’s.

Annual Precipitation

Precipitation data alone may not explain variation in flow, and groundwater may significantly contribute to the system.

Peak Flow

Lowest low flow events in both rivers occurred between 1990 and the present time which may indicate a pattern of increasing frequency of extremely low flow events. Extreme low flow events do not coincide with particularly low annual precipitation or flow, but they may be due to periods of seasonal drought.
