Watershed Map Gallery for Internet Users: York River and James River Watersheds
The Comprehensive Coastal Inventory Program (CCI) at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has been accumulating available resource information in support of watershed level planning for more than ten years. The York River and James River Watersheds have been the focus of this effort. In the last eight years, annual map portfolios and reports have been periodically released to a small suite of individuals at the state and local level. These reports have integrated watershed level data across various agencies within a single GIS framework. Among other areas of emphasis, they have most notably provided support to the state's tributaries strategy development and implementation process.
This website, "A Watershed Map Gallery" was developed to increase the distribution of the hardcopy mapped products originally released with a very limited distribution. Two galleries of map products can be viewed. The York River Watershed Map Gallery was developed between 1992 and 1997, and includes 26 different map compositions, each with a brief description. The James River Watershed Map Gallery was developed between 1998 and 1999. It includes 46 map compositions with descriptions. The watershed of the James River is divided into three segments, the Coastal plain, the Piedmont, and the Mountain Region because of its size.
Maps were generated from GIS based coverages developed by CCI or other state and federal agencies, as indicated. Sources of data include the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, the United States Census Bureau, the Chesapeake Bay Program, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the United States Geological Survey. CCI provides these data with the understanding that it is not guaranteed to be correct or complete, and conclusions drawn from the data are the sole responsibility of the user.
