I have 2-3 new opening positions (in-person work-from-office only) to fill in the near future in my team. New hires will work on projects funded by NOAA, EPA and state agencies, and can be at post-doc or staff levels depending on prior experiences. We offer competitive compensation and excellent benefit packages. For those with good qualifications (especially prior experiences with using SCHISM) I may be able to speed up the hiring process significantly without going thru the normal search. Continuation beyond the first year is subject to satisfactory performance and continued funding, but all positions have long-term prospective.

Some details of the projects we are working on:

  • NOAA (5 years): (1) coupled inland-coastal inundation hazard; (2) ESMF/NUOPC cap for SCHISM to support NOAA's Unified Forecasting System (UFS); (3) Basin-to-creek forecasting systems for Atlantic and Pacific Oceans
  • EPA (6 years): operationalize SCHISM as Chesapeake Bay Program's Phase 7 Main Bay Model and also support Multiple Tributary Model effort. A major goal is to help set Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) for the Bay
  • Delta Science Council (CA; ends April 2023): develop a coupled hydrodynamic-biogeochemical model for San Francisco Bay and Delta region
  • National Tsunami Program (on-going): work on tsunami hazards in Oregon including probabilistic tsunami inundation
  • CA Dept of Water Resources (on-going): work on flexible biogeochemical framework (FABM) to support Bay-Delta water quality studies
  • Other industry collaborations on compound flooding hazards

California Dept of Water Resources (Feb 2022)

We are hiring two engineers, and an ad is published here

Here is the job description: Job Description and Duties Are you looking for a job that can support water resources management of the State of California with your insight, knowledge and modeling and data analysis skills? Discover your full potential and develop your career with us. The Department of Water Resources’ Modeling Support Branch’s Delta Modeling Section is seeking qualified candidates who can solve complex challenges associated with Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta (the Delta) and beyond. In the Delta Modeling Planning Applications Unit, you will work collaboratively under the guidance of senior engineers performing engineering activities related to the Delta, for example: • Helping to craft and execute studies involving Delta infrastructure, climate change and operations, • Developing and improving numerical/statistical/mathematical models, • Assembling and analyzing data using tools such as Python/R/GIS, • Preparing technical reports and manuscripts that advance topics pertinent to water project operations and Delta stewardship, • Reviewing research and documents, adding critical analysis, and communicating engineering research results to stakeholders and management. We collaborate with industry-leading experts to develop/maintain/apply state-of-the-art tools and data so that we can support science-based decision making. Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission (Nov 3, 2021)

The Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission’s (CRITFC) Coastal Margin Observation and Prediction (CMOP) program is seeking a full-time experienced SCHISM modeler to continue development of SCHISM models for the Columbia River Basin (river, estuary and coastal ocean) and for the Pacific Ocean Basin. This position will work collaboratively with fish scientists and managers to integrate numerical hydrodynamic modeling into conservation and management programs for critical fish species and stocks in the Columbia River, focusing on Upper Columbia summer and fall chinook and Snake River fall chinook, but including other salmonid species, lamprey, and sturgeon. Work may include incorporating high resolution wetland modeling, water control structures, and aquatic vegetation modeling into the existing CMOP SCHISM model and continuing development of individual based modeling of juvenile salmon.
