Postdoc position at Colorado School of Mine

The Colorado School of Mines seeks three to five post-doctoral researchers to support new projects connected with the NOAA- and USGS-sponsored Cooperative Institute for Research to Operations in Hydrology (CIROH). The positions are offered through the Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Geology and Geological Engineering, and the Hydrological Science and Engineering program. The post-docs will collaborate in a team environment with other CIROH-funded researchers and faculty at Mines, and interact with CIROH team partners at other US and Canadian institutions. Candidates should have expertise or interest in hydrodynamic and/or ice modeling (e.g., SCHISM, FVCOM, ROMS, CICE, etc.). Project Focus Area: • Hydrodynamic-ice modeling, working with an interdisciplinary team across several universities to improve hydrologic forecast capabilities in cold regions, such as ice formation and flooding in the Yukon River (Mines lead: Eric Anderson) PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES • Lead independent research activities in collaboration with faculty advisor • Participate in a weekly 1-hour research group meeting • Meet weekly with graduate students to provide mentoring and research guidance • Assist in preparing up to 2 proposals each year • Lead/submit a minimum of 2 research papers each year, and revise/resubmit others as needed • Conduct preliminary reviews of student research products: abstracts, posters, proposals, defense presentations, thesis, technical papers • Assist graduate students in submitting their work for publication, as appropriate • Present findings at regional and national conferences Additional responsibilities • Performs other duties as assigned • Additional professional development activities as mutually agreed upon by employee and advisor Minimum Qualifications • PhD in civil or environmental engineering, hydrology, watershed/earth science, data science or related field • Expertise in hydrologic/land modeling, riverine modeling (including stream temperature), geospatial data analysis, machine learning or data science • Computational experience including programming and Unix/Linux experience

Preferred Qualifications • Expertise in machine learning, spatial data analysis, and hydrologic modeling (particularly related to stream/river temperature) • Experience mentoring of graduate or undergraduates preferred • Strong hydrologic and/or land modeling, including hydrodynamic ice modeling, as applied to catchments, watersheds, basins, from local to large domains • Programming (Python, R, Fortran preferred), machine learning or data science, and statistical analysis • GIS (open source preferred), Google Earth Engine (GEE), and/or other spatial data tools, and website development experience is a plus (but not required) • Hydrometeorological forecasting knowledge • Experience with on Linux/Unix platforms, High Performance Computing, and modern code practice, including the use of online code repositories (e.g., Github) • Remote sensing and satellite dataset applications • Ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students • Excellent written and oral communication skills, particularly as evidenced by conference presentations or in-prep or published articles in peer-reviewed scientific publications • Interest in or experience with contributing to diverse, equitable, and inclusive research groups Job demands and working conditions • Computer use and typing; sitting or standing (as preferred by employee) in office environment Colorado School of Mines is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer committed to achieving excellence and strength through diversity. New openings in lead developer's group (VIMS) (June 2023)

The lead developer's group have a few new opening positions (in-person work-from-office only) to fill in the near future in the team. New hires will work on projects funded by NOAA, EPA and state agencies, and will be at post-doc level first with long-term prospect, but exceptional candidates can be considered for staff hire directly. We offer competitive compensation and excellent benefit packages. Continuation beyond the first few years is subject to satisfactory performance and continued funding, but all positions have long-term prospective.

Some details of the projects we are working on:

  • NOAA (5 years): (1) coupled inland-coastal inundation hazard; (2) ESMF/NUOPC cap for SCHISM to support NOAA's Unified Forecasting System (UFS); (3) Basin-to-creek forecasting systems for Atlantic and Pacific Oceans
  • EPA (6 years): operationalize SCHISM as Chesapeake Bay Program's Phase 7 Main Bay Model and also support Multiple Tributary Model effort. A major goal is to help set Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) for the Bay
  • National Tsunami Program (on-going): work on tsunami hazards in Oregon including probabilistic tsunami inundation
  • CA Dept of Water Resources (on-going): work on flexible biogeochemical framework (FABM) to support Bay-Delta water quality studies
  • Other industry collaborations on compound flooding hazards

VIMS graduate fellowship (on-going)

The lead developer's group at Virginia Institute of Marine Science recruits MSc or PhD students on an annual basis, and the process typically starts in Dec of each year. Contact Joseph Zhang (yjzhang@vims.edu) directly for more info.

The lead developer's group is in charge of all aspects of SCHISM model development and applications, and support our user community and sponsoring agencies. Students have a wide range of topics to choose from, including coastal and estuarine processes, source code development, coupled earth system dynamics (ocean-atmosphere-ice), water quality/biogeochemistry processes, coupled hydrologic-hydrodynamic modeling for inland-coastal flooding, and environmental forecasting; all of these areas utilize High Performance Computing.
