Dr. Joseph Zhang's group at Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) is recruiting a new PhD student starting in 2017. The candidate will have the rare opportunity to work with the lead developer's team in numerical modeling of ocean and estuaries.

VIMS has a long and proud tradition of developing cutting edge models (based on either structured or unstructured grids) since 1990s. We are currently developing the next-generation unstructured-grid modeling system based on SCHISM, for seamless simulation of multi-scale processes from creek to ocean. More info can be found elsewhere in this wiki site.

Specific research topics for the PhD degree include: working on numerical method and model development; testing/applying the model to multi-scale problems as found in general circulation, sediment transport, biogeochemistry, wave-current interaction, tsunami/storm surge inundation, and associated uncertainty analysis; opportunity to participate in several recently funded projects on marsh dynamics, fishery management, tide-tsunami interaction, recurrent flooding, and global carbon cycling.

Applicants must have strong background/interest in computational maths, geophysical fluid dynamics, and committed to learning modern parallel programming. Motivated persons are encouraged to discuss directly with Dr. Zhang (yjzhang@vims.edu) on the application process, which starts in a few months.
